Perceptions of Youth

The media habitually portrays the young people of Britain in an overwhelmingly negative light, through use of heavy bias and derogatory terms such as ‘The ASBO Generation’ and 68% of youth coverage in newspapers across the country display young people in a negative fashion.

Young people are always spoken about, or spoken to but they’re rarely spoken with… And it’s extremely important that the British youth are given the opportunity to have their say, in their own media representation. To be given a chance to be heard and consulted in a way which is not tokenistic, but holds real value and worth!

They are not all yobs, thugs and hooligans… in fact this common misconception has been led by the media’s persuasive powers. And the British public now understand youth crime is on the rise, when it has in fact been falling for the past 10 years!

Skewed media reportage compromises public confidence in our adults of the future.

When you drill down to it, it transpires that it is a few young people who are causing the problem for many. Whole groups of people are being misrepresented because of the extreme actions of a minority, whose cases dominate the media.

It’s very hard to believe that an entire generation can be inherently bad!

Do you ever see any teenagers like the ones that you know in the media? The teenagers like your children, or your grandchildren… doesn’t that make you think about the kind of information you are being presented with!?

It’s insane how much we allow the media to monopolise our thoughts, over riding our personal experiences and taking their word for fact!

There are approximately 5.5 Million ‘youth’ aged 13 to 19 in the UK…
- How can we tar them all with the same brush?

What happened to the vibrancy of youth?
